DADDYS MONEY WATERFOWL

Redheads

Redhead Duck

  • Scientific name: Aythya americana

  • Type: Diving duck

  • Family: Pochards (same group as canvasbacks, bluebills, ringnecks)

 Identification

  • Drake (male):

    • Rich reddish-chestnut head

    • Gray body with fine vermiculation

    • Black chest and tail

    • Blue-gray bill with a black tip

  • Hen (female):

    • Brownish overall

    • Paler face with a subtle light eye ring

    • Grayish bill with dark tip

At a distance, drakes can get confused with canvasbacks—but redheads have a rounder head (not the sloped wedge look).

  • Migration: Central & Mississippi flyways

  • Wintering:

    • Southern U.S.

    • Gulf Coast

    • Chesapeake Bay

They love:

Diet

Mostly vegetarian compared to other divers:

  • Pondweed

  • Wigeon grass

  • Wild celery

  • Some aquatic insects & mollusks mixed in

This plant-heavy diet is why they raft up hard on specific food sources.

Breeding (fun fact)

  • Hens often lay eggs in other redhead nests

  • They’ll also dump eggs in canvasback nests

  • Canvasbacks = very annoyed about this

Flight & Behavior

  • Fast, direct flight

  • Strong divers

  • Extremely social—big rafts on open water

  • Decoy pretty well when you’re near food and pressure is low
